Mushrooms as Medicine
Exploring Psilocybin: A Journey of Personal Growth.
In recent years, psilocybin, the active compound found in psychedelic mushrooms, has garnered increasing attention for its potential to facilitate profound personal growth and transformation. Once relegated to the realm of illicit drugs, psilocybin is now being recognized as a sacred plant medicine with remarkable therapeutic properties. Research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psilocybin holds promise in alleviating a myriad of mental health conditions, including depression, trauma, addiction, chronic pain, and even end-of-life anxiety. Beyond its therapeutic benefits, psilocybin is also revered for its ability to facilitate spiritual experiences and foster personal insight and growth.
Understanding Psilocybin
What is Psilocybin? Psilocybin, derived from various species within the psilocybe genus, including the well-known "magic mushrooms," acts primarily on serotonin receptors in the brain, inducing profound alterations in consciousness. Psilocybin, an active constituent found in the magic mushroom varieties, is turned into psilocin in your stomach where it is absorbed and then enters the nervous system by means of the serotonin receptors. Serotonin receptors are more commonly associated with our feel-good neurotransmitter, and many antidepressants also act on this pathway. This is why it is no surprise that in a world riddled with mental illness, this medicine is coming to the forefront of science and literature.
Like all mushrooms, magic mushrooms have mycelium, a neural network connecting them through the soil, and so much research done in the natural world surrounding mushrooms parallels what is happening within the human mind. Mycelium networks, often referred to as the "World Wide Web," represent a fascinating example of interconnectedness and collective intelligence in nature. These intricate networks of fungal hyphae span vast expanses beneath the soil, linking trees, plants, and other organisms in a complex web of communication and resource exchange. Much like neural networks in the brain, mycelium networks facilitate the transmission of information and nutrients, allowing for mutual support and symbiotic relationships among interconnected organisms. Interestingly, recent studies have shown parallels between mycelium networks and the concept of unified consciousness, suggesting that these natural systems operate as a single, cohesive entity. This idea of a shared consciousness is exemplified by the remarkable adaptability and problem-solving capabilities exhibited by mycelium. For instance, the Tokyo railway system famously utilized mycelium to map out its system, drawing inspiration from the efficiency and resilience of these natural networks. By recognizing the intelligence inherent in mycelium networks, we gain a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living beings and the profound wisdom encoded within the natural world.
Scientific studies have revealed that psilocybin promotes increased neural connectivity and neuroplasticity, leading to the formation of new neural pathways and networks. This neural rewiring is believed to underlie the therapeutic effects of psilocybin, allowing individuals to transcend entrenched thought patterns and behaviors to gain fresh perspectives on their lives. It is a revered and sacred medicine that has been found to be used in history throughout the world. Supporting humanity in its evolutionary process. Psilocybin has gained attention in the realm of ceremony, individual use, and even in other therapeutic settings.
Macrodosing- The Ceremony Aspect of Psilocybin Use.
Traditionally, psilocybin has been used in ceremonial settings by indigenous cultures, such as the Mazatec curanderos of Mexico. These ceremonies often involve consuming psilocybin mushrooms in a ritualistic manner, guided by experienced facilitators, and set within a sacred space. Mazatec dosing rituals typically range from 2.5 to 6 grams of dried mushrooms, accompanied by honey and cacao beans. Much like the Shipibo tradition with ayahuasca, the Mazatec use sacred prayers in ceremonies that bring the sacred medicine in a dark ceremonial setting with a shaman or curandero. Maria Sabina is most popularly associated with this tradition. She was
More modern ceremonial and therapeutic practices may utilize higher doses, but should always be guided by a trained curandera or therapist. Intention setting, along with careful attention to set and setting, plays a crucial role in guiding the ceremonial or therapeutic experience, ensuring safety and maximizing the therapeutic potential of psilocybin.

Microdosing - The Individual Use of Psilocybin.
In contemporary settings, individuals are increasingly turning to microdosing as a means of incorporating psilocybin into their personal growth practices. Microdosing involves taking sub-perceptual doses of psilocybin on a regular basis, typically ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 grams, several times per week. Research on microdosing has shown promising results, with individuals reporting increased mood, creativity, and cognitive function. Microdosing offers a more subtle approach to psilocybin use, allowing individuals to reap the benefits of the compound while minimizing the intensity of psychedelic effects.
There is a unique opportunity with microdosing due to the sub-perceptual effects, where we are able to perform double-blind-placebo-controlled trials with it. These trials allow us to really trust the data that we are finding as truly being from psilocybin and not just placebo effects. These studies in addition to the effects mentioned above found people to be kinder and happier overall.
A third option aside from microdosing or macrodosing is utilizing a larger microdose, or somewhere between a microdose and macrodose. Trying this while intentionally performing a ritual or meditation, will allow you to start to develop your own personal relationship with the spirit of psilocybin and begin to consciously reap the benefits. Either way, psilocybin can be a powerful ally when utilized in a personal setting.
Personal Stories and Experiences:
Though scientific research and evidence are impressive and important, we are huge advocates at Alchemia for the real stories of real people who have utilized these medicines on their spiritual journeys. Psilocybin tends to be described as childlike and otherworldly by those who meet this spirit in ceremony. In the Mazatec tradition, they are even called niño Santos or child saints, which is such a beautiful omen to this wonderful medicine.
A favorite story of one of my experiences with psilocybin, which I feel really speaks to its relationship to humanity was when the medicine showed me an angler fish. Now for those of you who don’t know what angler fish is, it is a very strange-looking fish that lives in the dark depths of the ocean. It has evolved over time creating this dangling light lure called an “esca” that lights up and attracts its prey to it. The esca or lure is actually a symbiotic relationship between the angler fish and a bacteria that inhabits it and lights it up. This part of the angler fish’s form grew just so that these bacteria could support them in catching their food. My interpretation of my journey is that our brains are designed to receive the support of these psychedelic medicines, much like the angler fish’s lure, and when entering into a symbiotic relationship it can be beneficial for all. In my experience, magic mushrooms are a very loving and wise consciousness, that wants to support humanity in our vision of a more loving world in balance with Mother Earth.
When entering into a relationship with any plant spirit medicine, it is to be approached with sacredness and love in your heart. No two journeys will ever be the same, but you will learn to trust that each one is exactly what you need at that moment. Some will have visions, some will have somatic and emotional experiences, and some will go into other dimensions, the best approach is to have no expectations and set strong aligned intentions for your experiences. Enjoy this relationship as you journey and open into yourself.
